Bill and Edna Octavian each came from large families. Raised as friendly neighbors among the majestic redwoods of Mt. Shasta country, Bill was seventh of ten children; Edna was third eldest in an “old-fashioned” family of eleven siblings. When they married as childhood sweethearts in 1986, it was not surprising that Edna was soon “expecting.” Fifteen offspring later, she finally became content just to mother the ones she’d already had. “Cheaper by the dozen,” Bill liked to say, and the first dozen; Cynthia, Edna Jr., Sam, Trevor, Robert, Fred, Karen, Octavia, Peter, Simone, Clifton, and Roger, seemed that way at times, but then along came Paul, Maureen, and Sippy. In fact, it was Sippy’s broken arm (she fell from a backyard redwood while playing “I can see ALL the Octavians!”), that precipitated the discovery: The family no longer had health insurance! They’d had it back in the early 1990s when Sam was still the youngest, but they’d allowed that plan to expire, not giving it undue thought being preoccupied with other matters, and now all these kids later, it seemed that even finding a decent plan suited to their prolific circumstances would prove a task suitable for Paul Bunyan. But how to pay for Sippy’s surgery, there’s the rub. Bill felt overwhelmed and decided to pay the hospital bill out of pocket. But being a mere copywriter at an advertising agency, he suddenly worried about the next time. Fortunately, he knew just what to do. “I’m going to find us a California health insurance agent,” he told Edna. Edna, prone to pinching pennies, in this case unwisely, screamed, “No Bill, don’t do it! What if it’s a long distance call?” But Bill was undeterred.

A few days later, The Octavians not only had their “king-sized” family plan, as Bill and Edna referred to it, but also a CURRENT and extremely helpful California health insurance agent to call their own. “He’s a nice man,” little Sippy said matter-of-factly, her arm still encased in a cast.

In the Flotsam family, the kids were always “going at it,” as their exhausted mom Doreen would tell it. “Stop it! Stop fighting!” she’d scream quite often, while referring to ten-year-old Johnny and eight-year-old Ben. During any given moment, an observer might notice Flossy, the family’s beloved Angora, gazing at the kids with a pet cat’s disinterest while Johnny gripped Ben in a fierce headlock, or Ben wrestled Johnny to the ground and punched him in the face, or either boy’s matchbox cars became metallic projectiles thrown with surprising force and speed, and exclamations of pain, “Owwh!” followed by a cry for Doreen to referee, “Mommy! He hit me!” These ceaseless exhibitions of sibling animosity continued as long as each child was conscious, and although Doreen would enviously watch shows featuring Super Nannies coming to the rescue, at her otherwise pleasant home, not even a ceasefire was in sight. So when her husband Denis returned home to their Rancho Bernardo sanctuary after too many sessions listening to a litany of kid woes (Denis worked as a child psychologist), Doreen needed to vent. “Do something!” she screamed at her possibly passive-aggressive hubby, “What if Johnny or Ben really hurt each other?” Denis knew that their family was “covered” in case of routine medical emergencies, but as he passively pondered the situation, a matchbox car came whizzing past his head; it looked like a miniature Chevy Vega. “Who threw that?” he bellowed. “I didn’t!” yelled Johnny and Ben in a rare show of synchronicity. Seconds later, Denis was on the phone to his friend Matt Lockard, a California health insurance agent, better than any TV nanny. “We need the kid’s plans you told me about!” he screamed into the receiver.

Matt, cool as a cucumber, said, “Let’s make an appointment then.” Three days later, Johnny and Ben still fought like little Banshees, but at least they were covered. Good thing too, because that afternoon, Ben threw Flossy across the living room at an unsuspecting Johnny.

Esther Sirica, 68, was planning to have a surgery performed on her left foot’s hammertoe. She had joined a swim club for seniors and wanted to show off her feet. “I’d always wanted to be a foot model when I was younger,” she explained, “in my day; a well-turned ankle was just the beginning.”

But she wasn’t independently wealthy, and there were gaps in her Medicare coverage that she didn’t understand. “When I asked my primary care physician about the surgery, he said that I wouldn’t be covered. “It’s elective surgery on a pre-existing condition,” he asserted. But Esther wasn’t convinced. “Men used to find my feet lovely,” she told her physician, “except for THAT one.” She was pointing to her hammertoe, not the photo of President-elect Obama on the nearest wall.

Esther quietly demurred amid the usual pleasantries, and begged her leave. A moment later she was off to find a second opinion. Her second opinion, an elderly physician who at least comprehended the surgery’s potential significance to the woman if not its urgency, did recommend the surgery, and perfunctorily checked out Esther’s Medicare coverage. “The surgery will cost $1,750,” he informed her.

“That’s not so much,” she said, assuming it was entirely covered except for her co-pays.

“But Medicare will approve only about half of that, $825.00,” he added.

“Oh,” she said, with sadness suddenly re-encroaching upon her entire being, including the deformed toe.

Fortunately, Esther’s next visit was to her California health insurance agent, a valuable source for information on Medicare Supplement coverage for the past year or two. The nice young agent there had mentioned something called Medicare Supplement Insurance policies as a way to plug the disturbing Medigaps.

A month later, Esther was in the pool with the seniors, literally a new woman. A gentleman swimmer named Tony was looking at her foot when he noticed it. “Didn’t you used to have a hammertoe?” he remarked.

Esther Sirica flashed a big smile, her dentures clicking.
